SONG Qingyang
Song Qingyang was born in Anyang, Heilongjiang. She currently lives and studies in Xi’an, attending the Third Studio of the Oil Painting Department at Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts. Her practice spans ceramics, mineral pigments, oil painting, and textiles, focusing on exploring the narratives of memory and perception through the physical properties of diverse materials.
Love Across Distance reflects Song’s acute exploration of material-driven narrative and the physical boundaries of emotion. Breaking free from the constraints of two-dimensional painting, the artist uses wooden panels as a support and, through the distinctive layering, flowing, and polishing techniques of mineral pigments, constructs a three-dimensional, architecturally resonant miniature space.
In her practice, Song eschews over-manipulation of the surface, allowing the inherent unpredictability of the pigments to enable color forms to meet and converse naturally at the planes and edges of the cubic structure. With restrained and relaxed brushwork, the work captures both the estrangement and connection that traverse interpersonal space. The strong material presence, combined with metaphorical visual language, transforms abstract emotions into tangible, perceptible evidence, creating a focused and spiritually charged narrative atmosphere.
