ZHANG Zhenshui

Zhang Zhenshui, graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Dalian Art College in 2022. Currently, he is a Master’s candidate (Class of 2024) in the Department of Oil Painting at the Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts.

Zhang’s practice is deeply rooted in a tactile engagement with native landscapes, aiming to capture the most authentic material textures of land and nature. In works such as Memories of the Westward Journey, he undertakes spontaneous experiments with thin-layer oil painting, combining flat washes and glazes to minimize the intrusion of subjective brushwork.

This restrained approach seeks a “relaxed” quality that approximates the material’s original state, transforming the forms of land shaped by riverine erosion into a visual record of micro-material relationships. The compositions emphasize spatial permeability, and through the subtle progression of tranquil tones, they convey the innate and unadulterated rhythms of life inherent in the natural landscape.
