LIU Tongbin
Liu Tongbin (b. 1972, Xuzhou) graduated from the Printmaking Department of Nanjing University of the Arts in 1995. He worked in Eritrea as a cultural envoy and is currently Deputy Director of Jiangsu Art Museum, Director of the Jiangsu Printmaking Institute, and Deputy Director of the National Key Laboratory for Water-based Printmaking Materials and Techniques. His works have been included in major national exhibitions, awarded multiple prizes, and collected by institutions in China and abroad.
Liu’s practice centers on observation and recording, using sketchbooks of drawings and collages as both intuitive observation and iconographic research. These fragments evolve into the foundation of his work, reflecting personal journeys while responding to wider issues of anxiety, urbanization, and the relationship between humans, society, and nature.
In recent years, he has expanded his practice through material experimentation, ranging from paper and wood to metal and industrial coatings. By emphasizing the significance of mark and trace, he creates a dynamic tension between precision and improvisation, building a distinct artistic language that extends printmaking into contemporary contexts.
