WU Yifei
Wu Yifei (b. 1989, Shanghai) received his BFA from the Shanghai Institute of Visual Art in 2012 and his MFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design, Atlanta, in 2018.
Wu Yifei’s sculptural practice explores the intersection of technology, biology, and imagination. His signature project, Inorganic Botany, envisions a future where humans use advanced technology to cultivate inorganic plants that mimic the life cycles of organic vegetation, capable of growth, reproduction, and mutation in any environment. Using 3D imagery software and 3D printing technology, Wu transforms these imagined digital-physical plants into tangible sculptures, combining traditional media with cutting-edge new media. Influenced by Kandinsky’s theory of “point, line, surface,” he abstracts the plants’ internal structures and cellular arrangements into bold, block-like forms, creating works that bridge virtuality, fantasy, and reality.
His recent solo exhibitions include Inorganic Garden, ART LABOR Gallery, Shanghai (2023); TheProcessing of Sculpture, TCT Asia, Shanghai (2020); Master, The APG Gallery, Georgia, USA (2018); Heads Up & Hands Down, The B Complex Gallery, Atlanta, USA (2017). His recent group exhibitions include Electric Picnic, ART LABOR Gallery, Shanghai (2020); Contemporary Art Show of China & Japan, Xuan Art Museum, Fujian Province (2019). He is currently based in Shanghai.
