The series of works showing in this exhibition, Ye Jiang explores recognizable human forms that are derived from public signage and everyday life. The human shapes are inspired by common public symbols and the colors drawn from these sources, with the only difference being that the figures in the works incorporate various dynamic postures and movements found in real human life.
Ye Jiang’s works present a flat composition, situated between abstract hard-edged painting and figurative narrative painting. This approach stems from his understanding of the medium of painting. He believes that the painting should be a combination of a tangible, solid plane and a deceptive spatial illusion, existing somewhere between reality and illusion, between “seeing” and “reading.” Within this space, the social and narrative qualities of the human form come into play. Although these human forms have clear directionality, they are extracted from their original context, thereby granting them an independent significance within the realm of painting.
Ye Jiang hopes the painting can exist as a combination of flat surfaces, colors, and shapes, while also carrying meaningful content. The audience can move back and forth within it, finding points of interest that resonate with them.
