Wu Junyong
Born in 1978 in Putian, Fujian Province. He received both his Bachelor’s (2000) and Master’s (2005) degrees from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou.
Wu’s practice spans a diverse range of media, including animation, painting, and improvised tattooing. He is known for his unique approach and aesthetics, combining the Chinese vernacular from his childhood with the Western classics from art school training. His works often feature the juxtaposition of eastern and western mythologies and humorous wordplay to expose the fragility and absurdity of modern life and to demonstrate a sensitivity and concern for social themes.
Since 2002, Wu’s works have been widely exhibited in China and internationally, including Groninger Museum, Saatchi Gallery, Korea’s National Museum of Contemporary Art, Daegu Art Museum, Ullens Center for Contemporary Art. In 2023, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston presented his solo exhibition, Realm of the Otherworld. His works are held in the collections of numerous museums, institutions, and private collections.
